12-5A BASEBALL: Stallions edge Tyler Lee for first district win

Published: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 12:30 AM CDT
It is not often that a team gets only two hits and still wins.

But that is what North Mesquite's Tyler Starks allowed his team to do on Tuesday.

Starks limited Tyler Lee just no runs and two hits and the Stallions did just enough on offense to pull out a 1-0 victory.

North Mesquite avoided the fate of Horn and Mesquite, who each lost on Tuesday to fall to 0-2 in 12-5A.

Thomas Oberg doubled for the Stallions, who with their recent surge are now 8-6 overall.

While North Mesquite managed only the single run, that was one more than their crosstown rivals could muster.

Rockwall held the Jaguars to just three hits in an 8-0 victory. Cole Ballew had a pair of triples and Dustin Angiel doubled twice to lead the Yellow Jackets.

Rockwall-Heath got a pair of home runs from Clayton Rasbeary and a stellar pitching performance by Connor Roth in an 11-0 shutout of Mesquite.

Something has to give on Friday when Mesquite and Horn meet in search of their first district wins. North Mesquite travels to face Rockwall the same night.

The Skeeters and Stallions will then clash for the first time on Tuesday, while the Jaguars host Longview.

TOURNAMENTS

Mesquite and North Mesquite had stayed busy in tournaments late last week.

The Stallions had an impressive run at the Grand Prairie Classic, falling just short of an undefeated record.

North Mesquite was dominant on the first two days, winning three games by a combined score of 35-0.

The Stallions opened with an 11-0 victory over former district rival DeSoto on Thursday. Tyler Starks threw a two-hitter, with Thomas Oberg, Ivan Santoyo and Brandon Hickman powering the offense with extra base hits.

North Mesquite followed that game up with a 17-0 rout of Garland. This time, it was Cameron Henderson's turn to shine on the mound, as he allowed only two hits. Hickman belted a home run, Chris Peterson tripled and Starks and Bobby Albair each doubled to pace a 12-hit attack.

Dennis Harper and Zach Bomer combined to post the Stallions' third consecutive shutout in a 7-0 win over South Garland on Friday. Henderson and Hunter Benavidez each had extra base hits.

North Mesquite's streak finally came to an end on Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Grand Prairie.

Mesquite won two of its three games at the Duncanville Art Blair Classic.

The Skeeters got off to a rough start with a 10-0 loss to the hosts, but turned things around from there.

Dakota Taylor allowed only three hits and Carlos Chavez had a double in a 3-2 win over Poteet. Grant French then pitched around nine hits and Devin Rose had a big hit in a 6-3 victory over Mansfield Timberview.
