10-4A BASEBALL: Pirates, Wranglers fall short

Published: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 1:48 AM CDT
It has been a rough start to the 10-4A baseball season for Poteet and West Mesquite.

Both the Pirates and Wranglers came up on the short end on Tuesday to fall to 0-2 in district play.

Poteet was doubled up by Forney in a 6-3 loss. Trey Stone and Hunter Broyles each doubled, but the Pirates managed only three hits in the game.

West Mesquite got out to an early lead but could not hold on in a 5-2 loss to Terrell.

The Wranglers led 2-0 after getting a two-run single from Alejandro Gonzalez, but the Tigers answered with three runs in the fourth and then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

West Mesquite will continue its search for its first district win when it plays at North Forney on Friday and at Highland Park on Tuesday.

Poteet has a pair of home games, hosting the Scots on Friday and Carrollton Creekview on Tuesday.

TOURNAMENT

Poteet had shown signs of turning the corner last week at the Duncanville Art Blair Classic, winning two games and narrowly missing out on a third.

The Pirates doubled up Sherman in the opener on Thursday in an 8-4 victory.

Matt Hecht got the win on the mound, as Poteet scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the third.

Hunter Broyles led the offense with two doubles and five RBIs, while Trey Stone, Chase Coronado and Angel Rodriguez also drove in runs.

Poteet was edged by Mesquite in a 3-2 loss on Friday, but bounced back with an 8-6 victory over Denton Ryan on Saturday.

Stone, Rodriguez and Jordan Risedorf each had two hits and a run batted in, as the Pirates used a five-run rally in the fourth inning that proved to be the difference.

West Mesquite suffered a pair of narrow losses at the same event. The Wranglers took Duncanville into extra innings before finally falling, 8-7, in nine innings.

Alejandro Gonzalez tripled and drove in three, Blake Seaton had a double and two RBIs, while Dre Williams and Javier Veloz also plated runs.

West Mesquite actually led 7-2 early on, but the Panthers scored three times in the sixth inning to tie it up and then plated the game-winner in the ninth.

Seaton remained hot against Kennendale, with two doubles and four runs batted in, but it was not enough, as the Wranglers again fell in extra innings, 9-7.

West Mesquite had scored four runs in the seventh inning to extend the game, but Kennendale was able to come through in the 10th to earn the win.
