Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) confirmed on Monday that a 12-year-old Dallas County child's death was flu-related.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laboratory determined the death was flu-related and informed the county officials. For medical confidentiality and personal privacy reasons, DCHHS has not provided additional identifying information of the victim.

The flu vaccine is recommended for almost everyone except children younger than 6 months of age. According to the CDC, the vaccine is the best means of flu prevention.

The vaccine is available for free in both the adult and children's immunization clinics on the first floor of the DCHHS building at 2377 N. Stemmons Freeway in Dallas. Both clinics are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

"This offer is one that should be hard to pass up," said DCHHS Director Zachary Thompson. "Parents should come and get the whole family vaccinated."

Residents can call 214-819-2163 for vaccine availability.
