Welcome, summer sports season

Published: Thursday, March 14, 2013 11:29 PM CDT
The sports season is upon you, Frisco.

With FC Dallas' 2013 season beginning earlier this month, area residents now have their choice of soccer (FC Dallas), basketball (Texas Legends) or hockey (Texas Tornado) games, and soon baseball will be added to the mix when the RoughRiders' season opens on April 11.

While North Texas residents will be able to watch most RoughRiders home games on TV thanks to a new deal with KTXD-TV, there's something to be said about spending a summer night at a sporting event.

Growing up, I went to quite a few Texas Rangers games during the summer months, which I'll probably remember as long as I'm alive (or as long as I'm sane -- that may be a better metric of measurement for someone in the journalism profession).

That's certainly one of the alluring aspects of living in Frisco, as even though you're close enough to Dallas to visit a Mavericks or Stars game, there are also plenty of great sporting venues to visit in the city itself.

The RoughRiders have plenty of MLB-ready talent, evident by the fact that the team is routinely rated one of the best farm clubs for an MLB team. And though soccer may not get as much love as it should in the United States, FC Dallas games are entertaining and take place in a beautiful stadium.

On top of that, the ticket prices for sporting events in Frisco are actually reasonable, and concessions are nowhere near as absurd as the $500 nachos they serve at Mavericks games. You don't have to throw the piggy bank against the wall just to have a night out.

The Texas Tornado and Texas Legends' seasons may be gearing down as FC Dallas and the RoughRiders are going in the opposite direction, but the benefit of that fact is the playoffs feature a high-intensity level of competition. Unfortunately the Legends need some help to make the playoffs, but the Tornado still have some gas in the tank.

You can stay inside and wait for the Dallas Cowboys season to begin if you want, but if it were me, I'd be attending as many events in Frisco as possible. The summer months are about as good as it gets for a sporting atmosphere. Want to sit down inside Cowboys Stadium? Psh, that air-conditioned atmosphere can take a back seat to the great outdoors.

With the summer months nearly upon us, sporting events are a lot of fun to attend in near-perfect weather. So pack up the children and prepare -- it's nearly time to enjoy the school break and have some family fun.
