Live and Local: Celina to host Cajun Festival on the Square

Published: Friday, March 15, 2013 3:21 PM CDT
North Texas residents will have an opportunity to discover the energetic sound of Zydeco, a blend of Cajun music and rhythm and blues, at Celina's first-ever Cajun Festival on the Square next Saturday, March 23.

Four bands will be performing at the event starting at 11 a.m. Opening the show will be Neon Lights at 11 a.m., followed by Dallas-based Jay-B and the Zydeco Posse at noon, The Joel Martin Project at 2 p.m. and 2013 Grammy Award-winning Wayne Toups and ZyDeCajun at 4 p.m.

"I think it's a great time to be a part of the community, so it'll be a fun event for everyone," said David Gaines, assistant to the Celina city manager.

With American folk music roots, Zydeco is a blend of Creole, hip-hop, soul and reggae with an influence of the blues that is presented in an energetic style. A staple of the music is the button or piano accordion and a form of washboard called a rub-board.

"[Wayne Toups] plays a sort of Cajun music, but it's more upbeat," Gaines described. "It'll really give some energy to the crowd. He's been doing it for so long -- he'll definitely get people excited."

The city encourages visitors to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the live performances.

Besides the music that is sure to get people dancing, the Cajun Festival will host a car and motorcycle show, local vendors, a pet adoption, craft show, a rock-climbing wall and activities for children until 7 p.m. Downtown restaurants will be selling food outside of their businesses for purchase throughout the event.

"Our main goal is to bring people to the Square," said Terri Wilson, Celina Main Street director. "We just want people to come out and enjoy all the activities."

And, of course, a Cajun festival wouldn't exist without a crawfish boil, which will be prepared by a Louisiana vendor and will be available for purchase.

Gaines said that while talking to people in area communities, residents were already hosting their own crawfish boils at get-togethers in their own homes.

"There was a desire there, an interest at least, in crawfish, and the Cajun [Festival] just kind of came from that," Gaines said.

Before the bands are set to perform, the Celina Cajun 5K Run will kick off the day's activities at 8 a.m. at Light Farms, the new development at Dallas Parkway north of Frontier Parkway. Participants in the 5K run can register online at active.com, or mail registration to David Gaines, 142 N. Ohio St., Celina, Texas 75009.

Adult tickets for the 5K run cost $30 and students 18 years and younger cost $20. Checks can be made payable to City of Celina.
