WEB EXCLUSIVE: Leaps and bounds: Johnson's record-breaking pole vault keys East win

Published: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 11:39 AM CDT
For the first time this season, all three Plano ISD track and field squads occupied the same venue.

Kimbrough Stadium, site of the District 10-5A Meet on April 9-10, played host to the Ron McNeill Invitational March 7 for an afternoon where early city supremacy was established and even a city record was broken. That came courtesy of Plano East's Morgan Johnson, who highlighted the Lady Panthers' meet victory by breaking not just her own school record in the pole vault, but setting a new city-wide standard in the event.

Johnson leapt to a 12-07 to garner 10 of East's 175 total points. The Plano West girls placed second (123), while Plano Senior posted fourth (99).

Vaulting to the top spot, Johnson's performance was fitting as East cleaned house for the day's field events with six top-two finishes.

Four of those were first-place marks by the Lady Panthers, including Maggie Becker in the high jump (5-04), Ambria Tisdall in the discus (114-00) and Jordan Welch in the shot put (38-08 3/4). Jackeria Hughes added first in the 200 meters (26.32) while the quartet of Maggie Crossland, Allison Compass, Madison Compass and Ashley Ready picked up top honors in the 1,600 relay.

The Lady Wolves captured the bulk of their points in the distance runs, highlighted by first-place finishes from Valarie Bradley in both the 800 (2:22.34) and 1,600 (5:30.69), and Sage McAdams in the 3,200 (11:53.34).

Plano proved adept in the medium-distance fray, with Christian Coosa scampering to first in the 400 (1:00.46) while Natalie West ran a 47.16 for first in the 300 hurdles.

The slate was a bit more diverse on the boys side of the meet where just five total first-place finishes were mustered in Plano ISD.

That didn't necessarily reflect in the overall totals with West tallying second (113) -- just eight points shy of first-place Jesuit. East was third (84) while Plano finished fifth (46).

West banked on a well-rounded ensemble for 11 finishes in the top four, despite having just two participants win their events -- Jason Stephens in the 200 (22.22) and Robert Kemp in the long jump (22.05). East was led by Chris Ntreh in the 100 (10.84) and Phillip Metcalfe in the 3,200 (10:01.25), both of whom placed first in addition to Plano's Matthew Hall in the 800 (1:58.28).

In the midst of Spring Break, the time off will last just two more days for East, which returns to action Saturday at Lowden Track Complex in Fort Worth for the TCU Relays.

Their female counterparts will host the Plano East Invitational from Kimbrough Stadium at 1 p.m. March 22. Both boys and girls squads from East, West and Plano will be in attendance.
