No. 100: Velasquez tallies historic goal as West Mesquite boys roll over Kaufman

Published: Friday, March 15, 2013 11:27 PM CDT
With the biggest match of the season on the horizon against rival Poteet, West Mesquite got off to a sluggish start on Friday against Kaufman.

The Wranglers knew just who to turn to.

Senior Isai Velasquez provided the spark, drawing a foul and then converting a penalty kick. He was far from through, as he went on to score three more times, the last of which was the historic 100th of his high school career as West Mesquite posted a 5-0 victory at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

The Wranglers (10-0-0-0, 30 points) stay perfect in 23-4A and can now turn their attention to Poteet (9-1-0-0, 27), a 4-1 winner over Forney on Friday, as those two teams meet with the district title on the line

"We knew that game was coming up on Tuesday, but we tried not to look ahead because Kaufman has given us some trouble in the past," West Mesquite head coach Alex Figert said. "We started off a little sluggish, but Isai was able to get something going and get a PK and that got us started ... I thought we did a good job after that."

Velasquez, who had scored 10 goals in his previous three games, added three more to provide some cushion, including the milestone, with Emmanuel Hernandez tallying another.

It was the kind of performance West Mesquite has come to expect since Velasquez was called up midway through his freshman season.

"He just knows how to score; he's fast, but he's quicker than he is fast and then he is left-footed, so that just seems to make for a good scoring combination," Figert said. "It is a hard thing to do scoring goals and kids either have it or they don't, and he definitely has it. He is a special kid."

The Wranglers will now meet rival Poteet in the most anticipated district game of the year on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. West Mesquite won the first meeting, 1-0, but they are expecting even more of a challenge in the second go-around.

"The kids are looking forward to it, but I'm not sure I am because Poteet has been playing real well since we beat them the first time. It might have been a wake-up call," Figert said. "It is a rivalry game, it is for the district championship, it is Poteet. It is going to be a great game and whoever plays best that night is going to win. Hopefully, that will be us."
