Boys basketball: Frazier's 24 points leads Kimball past Smith

ADDISON - Kimball standout Keith Frazier has made a name for himself as one the premier outside shooters in the nation.
On Friday, Newman Smith limited the McDonald's All-American to 0-for-6 from 3-point range but Frazier still managed to pour in 24 as the Knights eliminated the Trojans in an area-round contest, 74-57, at the Loos Fieldhouse.
"I really think it came down to experience," said Perci Johnson, Smith head coach. "They've been there. Down the stretch, I think they executed. Defensively, we tried to throw a lot of things at them, but they had an answer for a lot of them."
But moments later, following a Kimball timeout, Frazier spun and got to the bucket for a deuce before converting an and-1 on off a head fake to put Kimball back in control at 61-51. As they had throughout, the Knights were able to convert their free throws in the final minutes to seal the win.
In addition to his game-high in scoring, Frazier had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Early in the second quarter, he delivered a sequence of consecutive steals he took coast-to-coast for dunks.
"Oh wow," Johnson said of Frazier. "I think the guys we had guarding him did a spectacular job, but he's a great player. There's a reason why he is a McDonald's All-American. We tried to double him, but he would find the open guy."
In addition to Frazier's output, Kimball received 19 points from Trent Brinkley, who was 6-of-7 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line. For the game, Kimball shot 19-of-22 from the free throw line and outrebounded the Trojans, 34-29.
"That's what they do best," Johnson said. "They crash the boards and are long and tall. You can't coach height and at the end they had the rebounds to extend possessions and then they executed."
Smith was paced by 21 points from Walter Rickett, who was 6-of-11 from the floor and 9-of-13 from the charity stripe. The senior delivered a trio of and-1's in the second half to keep the Trojans within striking distance and posted 10 of his points in the final quarter.
"I have to give it Walter," Johnson said. "He's going to leave it all on the floor. I will go to battle with him and he has a bright future."
Darion Brown sparked the Smith offense in the first half, where he recorded 10 of his 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including both of his 3-point attempts.
Rickett, Camryn Cole and Dareon Hill paced Smith with six rebounds apiece.
While the Trojans came up short Friday, it was still a banner season in which the team claimed its first district title since 2010 and defeated The Colony in the first round, 67-66. The Cougars had lost to the Trojans four times during the regular season.
"We started the season and our mission was one game at a time," Johnson said. "But these guys never quit. Practices were tough and they stayed focused and never got discouraged. Nobody gave us a chance in the district. We were picked third, fourth or at the bottom. But look what they did: district champs. I'll go to war with these guys any day."
