Jersey Mike’s supports Wipe Out Kids Cancer drive

Published: Tuesday, March 19, 2013 1:08 PM CDT
People were lined up down the block last week to get an Italian sub sandwich from Jersey Mike’s restaurant which opened Wednesday on Denton Tap Road, just south of Sandy Lake Road.

Many of them had coupons for a free sandwich. However, Dalton Stewart, owner, said at least three fourths of those in line were there to provide “real business” for the new restaurant.

Stewart said some of the people who came to the restaurant were given free coupons, but were invited to make a donation to the Coppell Education Foundation.

“We are big believers in giving back to the community,” Stewart said.

A total of 19 Jersey Mike’s restaurants in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, including the new one in Coppell, are also involved in the Fourth Annual March Month of Giving fund raising campaign to raise money for Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer (WOKC).

The campaign runs all month long, with Jersey Mike’s making a 25-cent donation to WOKC for each regular sub sold, and a 50-cent donation for each giant sub sold.

Wednesday, March 27, has been designated WOKC Day and on that day, Jersey Mike’s will donate 100 percent of its receipts to Wipe Out Kids Cancer.

In addition, special donation buckets will be available in each store so customers can offer their own contributions to the charity. DFW residents are invited to make a difference for Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer by eating at Jersey Mike’s during the month and to spread the word to friends, family and co-workers.

The Month of Giving campaign has raised a total of $225,000 over the last three years for Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer which has been used to fund research trials investigating new treatment options for two types of childhood cancers, medulloblastoma and neuroblastoma, and to expand the WOKC Buddy Bag program which reaches out to newly diagnosed families.

A total of 18 children in the Dallas area who have been diagnosed and treated for some form of cancer are serving as 2013 WOKC ambassadors, including Asher Pearson, 5, a preschooler at Denton Creek Elementary in Coppell, and Saket Ashar, 12, a sixth grader at Coppell Middle School.

Asher’s mother, Lyndsey Pearson, said her son was diagnosed with Leukemia on March 14, 2012, but is now in remission.

“He lost his hair when he had chemo,” she said, “but it came back thicker and more curly than before.”

Evelyn Costolo, WOKC CEO, said, “Each day 46 children in America receive the devastating news that they have cancer.  One in every five will not survive this diagnosis.  Thanks to the incredible support of donors like Jersey Mike’s, we are making a difference in the fight for better treatments and the search for a cure.”

She added, “Jersey Mike’s understands the importance of standing together for the future of our children. The funds raised through the Month of Giving will provide funding for critical research projects that give hope to our vision of a day when all children are living cancer free.”

The Jersey Mike’s Month of Giving fundraising initiative originated in the Dallas-Fort Worth market in 2010, when DFW Jersey Mike’s franchisees and their generous customers raised $50,000 for Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer. That inspired the current nationwide program which raised nearly $858,000 for 74 different charities nationwide in 2012.

Peter Cancro, who started the company when he was only 17 years old and is now CEO, said, “

“I would like to extend a personal invitation to come in and enjoy a Jersey Mike’s sub during our Month of Giving in support of one of your local charities. The opportunities to give are all around us so we hope this March, you will join us to make a difference in someone’s life.”

WOKC is a Dallas-based nonprofit organization founded in 1980 dedicated to raising awareness and funding for childhood cancer research. WOKC has raised over $4 million in the crusade against childhood cancer and spent over 30 years funding programs to not only fight childhood cancer, but to also provide hope and support to kids and families battling cancer.   For information about WOKC, go to www.wokc.org
