5,000 attend motorcycle competition event

A crowd estimated at 5,000 people came to Wagon Wheel Park in Coppell Saturday to watch police officers from various parts of the state show their skills in the Fifth Annual Coppell Police Motorcycle Competition.
“The event was a huge success,” said Josh Jackson of the Coppell Police Department. “At this point, we expect to donate between $27,000 and $30,000 to Metroplex COPS (Concerns of Police Survivors).”
Jackson attributed much of the success of Saturday’s event to the weather, which was warm but windy.
While most of the officers were from the Metroplex, some came from as far away as Houston, Corpus Christi and other parts of the state.
The crowds watched as the motorcycle police wound their way through obstacle courses.
Rhett Mathews, a Coppell canine officer, and Spyke, a German shepherd, entertained the crowd with demonstrations on how a trained dog can be used to locate illegal drugs and to bring a suspect under control.
Children had fun at bounce houses, including in an inflatable fire house which the wind blew over with children in it. While it caused a temporary concern to parents, there were no injuries and the fire house was immediately pulled back down into place with no one injured.
Several local and area businesses had vendors present for the occasion and a silent auction also took place to raise funds.
All funds raised for the event will benefit the Metrocrest Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS).
Casey Sessions was the only Coppell policeman to enter the competition. He competed in the Coppell Challenge and may have won had he not accidently knocked over a cone.
Carrollton officers Allen Hollis, Jason Wylie and Brian Box also participated in the competition.
T.E. Cabello of Corpus Christi may have driven the farthest distance to participate in the event. He said he brought his bike to Coppell on a trailer.
