Softball and baseball: Lights out: Power outage forces postponements of first night games

Published: Tuesday, March 19, 2013 5:01 PM CDT
The first home softball game under the lights for Southlake Carroll wasn't even completed March 12.

Instead, the Lady Dragons needed 30 minutes Wednesday to finish off their 11-1 run rule of Justin Northwest after a power outage last Tuesday caused the conclusion to be pushed back a day.

Carroll led, 5-1, at the time of the delay before posting a five-run inning the following day to improve to 3-1 in District 4-5A.

Alex Schneider threw all five innings with six strikeouts and three hits allowed to earn the win in the circle, while Christina Andrews paced the Lady Dragons' offense with three hits. Alexa Wimberly, Lauren Heintzelman and Gretchen Morgan had two RBIs apiece.

"We were able to string together hits for the big inning," said Tim Stuewe, Carroll head coach. "That's been our thing all year. We've done a good job of scoring runs."

While Andrews led the offense against Northwest, she notched the win in the circle Saturday in a non-district contest against Celina, which went Carroll's way, 7-1.

Andrews threw the first four innings before giving way to Schneider for the final three.

Sydney Bedford, Wimberly and Heintzelman each had two hits.

Carroll continued Tuesday against Keller (4-0), who is tied for first in district with Richland (results not available as of press time).

"It's a big game," Stuewe said. "We don't feel like we put our best game out when we lost to Richland, so we definitely have something to prove and are looking forward to the challenge."

On Friday, Carroll will host Keller Fossil Ridge at 5:30 p.m. The contest will be Carroll's annual Pink Out and is also the Southlake Girls Softball Association appreciation night where kids wearing their uniform receive free entry.

Baseball: Dragons stay perfect

Carroll's softball team wasn't the only program that had to deal with the power outage as the baseball game against Keller Timber Creek had to be completed Wednesday as well.

But the state's No. 4-ranked team wasn't phased as they remained perfect in district (3-0) with a 9-2 victory.

Sean Thompson picked up the win, while six different Dragons had RBIs, including two apiece from Ryan Weigel and Preston LeJeune. Barry Casey and Drew Brown had doubles for the Dragons, who came through in clutch situations with nine runs on just 11 hits.

"It was actually a pretty close game for a while and we scored four runs when we came back on Wednesday," said Larry Hughes, Carroll head coach. "[Timber Creek] swung the bat well and Sean had a little trouble early getting his off-speed stuff over the plate early before he settled down."

On Friday, Carroll needed extra innings but still managed to hand Richland its first loss in district after erupting for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning for a 7-0 margin. It was the second time in three games the Dragons won an extra-innings affair by six-plus runs.

Tyler Alexander (seven innings and the win) and Ben Leeper combined to throw the four-hit shutout, while Kenny Hill broke the scoreless tie with an RBI triple in the eighth. Hayden Zeir, Brown and Garrett Hale also drove in runs, while Conner Combs plated three more with a deep single.

"I told the guys on the bus that we definitely own the eighth inning," Hughes said.

The Dragons continued Tuesday against Northwest (results not available as of press time) before going on the road at 7 p.m. Friday at Keller.
