Goalarama: Broncos lock up 10-5A title in blowout win over Plano East

Published: Tuesday, March 19, 2013 10:55 PM CDT
MCKINNEY -- Last seen having a point taken for the first time during District 10-5A play, the McKinney Boyd boys soccer team wasn't about to leave Tuesday's game to chance.

Not with the outright District 10-5A Championship hanging in the balance.

And for the third straight season, that title belongs to the Broncos (8-0-1, 17 points) after cruising past Plano East (2-5-2, six points) for a 5-1 victory.

"It feels great, especially for the seniors who have worked so hard," said Casey Osborn, Boyd head coach. "A lot of those guys played significant minutes tonight and took care of business."

The five goals scored marked Boyd's second-highest output of the season and the team's most lopsided win thus far.

The chances were there all evening for the speedy Broncos, who had the East defense and junior keeper Fernando Rios Trevino scrambling all match long. The result was 14 shots on goal -- and a bevy of other attempts that sailed wide of the net.

"The way [Boyd] plays the ball through in the back and the speed that they have," said Rick Woodard, East head coach, "it really keeps you on your heels. It's hard to adjust to that and we don't well against teams who play the long ball and slide it through like that."

While the Broncos' speed would come into play, it was actually the precision of a free kick by senior Raul Serrano that got the ball rolling after a boot from 36 yards out was headed in by senior William Wiginton in the 16th minute for a 1-0 Boyd lead.

That shot marked the second attempt in a seven-minute span that saw the Broncos rattle off five shots on goal. Rios Trevino was tested plenty, forced into a slew of 1-v-1 chances and turning away of seniors Sewell Yost, Juan Moran and Dillon Farrell in the process.

"I thought our movement off the ball was really good tonight," Osborn said. "I thought we stuck to the game plan ... getting on the flanks, moving forward and keeping it simple."

Farrell would get an easier chance in the 23rd minute though, capitalizing on a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead that Boyd carried into the break.

The same applied to Moran, who took charge in the second half with a pair of hard-nosed goals in the 46th and 72nd minutes.

"[Moran] is a worker and a little busy bee up there," Osborn said. "He gets after it and good things happen when you're relentless like that."

As the points piled up for the Broncos, East countered with only five shots on goal opposite the net-minding duo of senior Patrick Ladd and sophomore Evan Davies. What fortune there was to be had came courtesy of senior Gustavo Piedra, who answered Moran's first goal with a score of his own in the 61st minute.

"Gustavo has played phenomenal all year long," Woodard said. "When we need someone to pick us up, he's always been there for us creating and playing well."

Freshman Jordan Zepeda accounted for a pair of shots on goal and senior Adam Schultz came within a hairline of a score of his own in the 17th minute before an outstretched Ladd deflected the ball up and over the net.

Piedra's goal was East's last attempt on goal for the night, as Boyd ballooned its lead with Moran's second score plus a goal by sophomore Kyle Bennett off a cross by senior Alex Lopez -- both of which occurred inside the final 10 minutes of the match.

Despite the setback, the Panthers still maintain the inside track on the district's final playoff spot and can sew it up with a win Friday at 5:30 p.m. from Clark Stadium when they clash with Plano West.

Boyd will wrap up its regular season at McKinney at 7:30 p.m.

"We win against West and we're in," Woodard said. "That's the message: we win and we're in."
