Softball: Lady Cougars bringing the lumber early

Published: Tuesday, March 12, 2013 5:57 PM CDT
Brooklin Olson had a pair of hits and three RBIs and Lindsay Jacobs struck out eight batters en route to the win in the circle Monday as The Colony's softball team topped Frisco Heritage, 6-4, to improve to 2-1 in District 9-4A action.

The Lady Cougars are 13-5 for the year as they look to return to the postseason for the third consecutive season.

"We're doing pretty well," said Deana Coleman, The Colony head coach. "We have eight returning starters and two freshmen who are kind of learning the ropes and are mixing in. But we've also had four injuries so far and that's kind of slowed us down a bit and caused us to change things around. It's kind of been a merry-go-round so far."

While players have missed time, Coleman doesn't expect anyone to remain out for the long term.

One of The Colony's returnees is Jacobs, who is out to a fast start in the circle.

"She's been phenomenal," Coleman said.

In a 7-1 loss to Frisco, Jacobs racked up 12 strikeouts. She also has a no-hitter on her resume this season (a 2-0 win Feb. 22 over Wylie).

Freshman Kaylee Freeman will also see time in the circle in addition to playing some first base and was hitting over .500 before suffering a shoulder injury.

Jacobs and Freeman will be firing pitches to catcher Megan O'Mary.

"She plays great defense and has also been hitting pretty well," Coleman said.

Around the infield are Tori Rendon at first, Shelbi Featherston (currently out) and Deven Ericksen at second, Tori Hawk at shortstop and Rachel Morgan at third.

Last season, Hawk was the district's Offensive Player of the Year.

"She's our leader," Coleman said. "She plays great defense, hits leadoff and leads us in stolen bases."

Morgan, meanwhile, has home run power.

"I feel like we have a lot of power, overall," Coleman said. "When we practice in our park, we're hitting all kind of things like the practice field and parking lot that we've never hit before."

Outfielders are Jocelyn Ward in right, Olson in left and Sarah Wiseman in center.

"Sarah was the defensive player of the year last season," Coleman said. "Jocelyn is also doing well and Brooklin does a really good job in the outfield and will also play a little second base."

Paige Lilley also contributes to the outfield.

"We're pretty solid defensively," Coleman said. "I've been pretty happy there. We have five seniors who have been starting since they were freshman. So they're very seasoned and have a great chemistry and feel for each other."

The Colony also continued to possess speed on the bases, as the Lady Cougars have their eyes on breaking the program record for steals (92) for a third consecutive season.

"We're still aggressive running the bases," Coleman added.

The Lady Cougars have their eyes on getting back to the playoffs, but that could prove challenging in a tough eight-team district.

"Frisco looks like one of the teams to beat," Coleman said. "Centennial is always tough and Wakeland should have a good team. It also looks like Prosper is turning it around and we already beat Liberty, but that was no cake walk."

For the Lady Cougars to be successful, they have to stay in the moment.

"We just need to take it game-by-game," Coleman added. "We don't need to put any extra pressure on ourselves, but we have high expectations. It starts with making the playoffs and then making a run. It's going to be a dogfight though."
