Frisco names Mark Piland new fire chief

Published: Friday, March 22, 2013 9:29 PM CDT
The city of Frisco has announced its new fire chief following a three-month search, naming Mark Piland to the position.

Piland, 53, comes to the city from the Volusia County Fire Services in Florida, where he is currently chief. He will begin serving as chief of the Frisco Fire Department on April 15.

"I am excited for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Frisco, as well as the men and women of the Frisco Fire Department," Piland said in a statement released by the city. "I look forward to continuing the great tradition of excellence that Frisco is known for."

The city had announced three finalists last month -- Piland; Christopher Celaya, deputy chief of the El Paso Fire Department; and Gregory Gammon, a retired chief of the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Department -- out of a pool of 101 candidates. The three men were interviewed shortly after the announcement.

Piland began his firefighting career in 1979 with the Virginia Beach (Va.) Fire Department. He retired from that department as an assistant chief in 2011. Prior to his retirement, Piland served as team leader of Virginia Task Force 2, an urban search and rescue group under the guidance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

With Task Force 2, Piland was deployed to several disasters, including the Pentagon on 9/11 and the Haiti earthquake in 2010.

After retiring from Virginia Beach, Piland was named to his current position as Volusia County's fire chief in 2011.

"I'm impressed with the credentials and experience Chief Piland will bring to Frisco," said Todd Renshaw, Frisco's director of public safety, in a statement released by the city. "I think he'll be a valuable addition to the Frisco Fire Department."

Piland earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Old Dominion University and has a master of public health degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. Additionally, Piland received the designation of executive fire officer from the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md. Piland and his wife, Wanda, have a 7-year-old daughter.

Frisco's fire chief position has been vacant since Mack Borchardt retired from the role in October. Borchardt, who had served as the city's fire chief for more than 30 years, is currently serving as a fire programs consultant and special assistant to the city manager.
