Ricketts commits to Texas Tech

John Paul II junior Claire Ricketts still has one more year left with the Lady Cardinals, but she's assured her basketball career four more years beyond that after committing to Texas Tech.

Verbally pledging to the Lady Raiders Wednesday night, Ricketts has helped anchor John Paul's frontcourt for the past three seasons -- leading the team in rebounding during the last two.

During her 2012-13 campaign, Ricketts aided the Lady Cardinals in their run to the program's first-ever TAPPS 5A State Championship. In doing so, she was named first team all-state and all-district.

Ricketts joins a Tech squad that went 21-10 during the regular season and 11-7 in Big 12 play, good for fourth overall.

West hockey at nationals

For the third consecutive year, the Plano West hockey team is competing in the USA Hockey High School National Championships.

Slotted in pool A2 of the American bracket, the Wolves split their first two games in pool play, opening Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over Medina (Ohio). Richard Turner sparked the Wolves with goals just under two minutes into first and second periods, and Bryson Boulanger secured the go-ahead goal 6:19 into the third period to give West a 1-0 start to tournament play.

Thursday's outing against Regis Jesuit (Colo.) wouldn't prove as kind to the Wolves, with Regis scoring six of the game's final seven goals in an 8-3 victory.

Boulanger, Trevor Ivy and Lance Carter Ratley scored for West in the loss.

Wildcats host golf tourney

In an effort to raise money for its program, the Plano Senior golf team will hold the Plano Wildcats Golf Classic on April 27.

Contested under four-man scramble format, the tournament will be held at Plantation Golf Club in Frisco and has a check-in time of 11:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m.

Individual registration is $110 while a team can sign up for $400 for a package that includes a cart and range balls, plus a goodie bag and dinner ticket. Participants have the option of renting a Wildcats golfer for $5 a hole.

Sponsorships range from $250-$1,000 and the event also features a silent auction and raffle.

Anderson offered by Texas Tech, Stanford

As the days go on, Plano West junior running back Auston Anderson continues to pick up Division I offers.

The latest came Tuesday from both Stanford and Washington, a day after Anderson was offered by Texas Tech.

Anderson received his first offer Feb. 6 from Northwestern. Rice, Navy, Arizona and UCLA were added to the list in subsequent weeks.

According to Anderson, no choice is imminent.

The 5-foot-8, 175-pounder moved to varsity as a sophomore in 2011, but became a full-time starter in 2012. The results were productive as the Wolves made the regional finals and Anderson was a first team all-district and all-Collin County selection after rushing for 1,156 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Blalock named Man of the Year

Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Justin Blalock has been named the 2013 Watkins Alumni Man of the Year by the National Alliance of African American Athletes.

Blalock is a Plano East alum.

Blalock, who runs youth football clinics in Atlanta and Plano (with the next local one June 22 at East), was given the Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Trophy "for his selfless service to others, a living example of the principals of the alliance."

The honors for Blalock don't stop there as he will be part of the next class for the Plano ISD Hall of Honor, which will be inducted May 18.

Burkhead honored by Plano

The city of Plano is planning to honor former Nebraska running back, and Plano Senior alumni, Rex Burkhead on April 22 with a ceremony at the Municipal Center (1520 Avenue K).

The event begins at 7 p.m.

Burkhead is being recognized for winning the 2012 Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion Award for bringing awareness to Jack Hoffman's fight with pediatric brain cancer.

That could be a big week for Burkhead as he is a candidate to be selected during the 2013 NFL Draft.
